Directors Australia 2023 highlights and what to expect in 2024

Directors Australia underwent significant growth in 2023, while helping many organisations do the same. Here, we look back on a strong 2023, and outline the ways in which we aim to leverage this success in 2024.

Board and governance advisory

By Katie Simpson, General Manager – Advisory

During 2023, our advisory team had the privilege of serving over 125 boards across a range of sectors nationwide. Our work spanned across ASX-listed companies, not-for-profit organisations, peak bodies, professional and industry associations, APRA-regulated entities, private companies and federal and state government entities.

Not only did the number of board performance and governance reviews increase year-on-year, so too did the demand for our strategy workshop, board training, risk advisory, and director remuneration service offerings.

We also collaborated with many of our clients to publish research papers in emerging areas of governance. We were especially proud to partner with Stewardship Asia Centre to support Asia Pacific-wide research focusing on the role of boards in driving the sustainability agenda.

Our focus on enhancing performance through best fit governance, coupled with our tailored advice and solutions, truly distinguishes us, and we look forward to building on this in 2024.

Board recruitment

By Vanessa Jolly, General Manager – Board Recruitment

Last year was another productive year for our board recruitment team!

We introduced 420 directors across Australia to clients for consideration, spanning a diverse range of sectors such as ASX-listed, not-for-profit, large privates, family businesses, industry associations and government entities. Our recruitment efforts spanned across entire boards, experienced Chairs, independent non-executive directors and independent committee members.

Remarkably, 67% of our placements this year were female, underscoring our commitment to improving diversity on boards. We take pride in our intentional focus on recruiting directors who bring a mix of inherent and acquired diversity. Our approach to board recruitment transcends conventional practices, ensuring a tailored alignment of directors with the distinct needs and dynamics of each company we support.

Beyond our core services, 2023 also saw us run webinars, guest speak at various events, collaborate with universities and member organisations, and develop tailored programs relevant to board recruitment. In 2024, our focus is on expanding these offerings even further.
